In my studies this week I reviewed a cherished book on my shelf, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, Keller.
The behavior of humans and sheep are similar. The characteristics of sheep reflect our human faults and insecurities. How often I find my mind flowing towards insecurities, fears and “what if” scenarios.
A good shepherd goes before his flock. He prepares each day for them, assuring they have clean water, ample feed and the finest grazing. This requires his diligent protection.
A necessary measure completed by a good shepherd is to pour oil upon the heads of his sheep. The reminder of this proactive measure was what I needed for reassurance this week.
Oil is applied upon the head of a sheep to protect from insects. A fly strike is when flies and insects lay and embed eggs into the wounds or soiled areas of a sheep. This then creates hatched insects that will eat at the flesh of the sheep causing great irritation, suffering and ultimate death.
How like us as humans. We often let fearful thoughts implant and remain. These toxic thoughts and “what if” “insects” then fester and grow. This in turn will start the cycle of uncertainty, fears and frustrations, ultimately leading to the damaging situations that suffocate our hopes and robs our peace.
How can this be prevented? By letting the Savior anoint our “heads with oil.” This and only this will protect, guard, shield and calm our “what-if” rabbit trails of thought.
Sheep can only relax when they are free of fear. What are your fears today? Do you desire to be protected from them? Do you want to be set free from them?
Trust the Lord. He desires to pull you close and pour His protective oil over you. Spend time in His word. Give your soul a “pouring of oil.” It WILL protect. It WILL provide. It WILL calm your fears and insecurities.
And remember…
I’m Listening!
